Design Inspirations

Charles Fletcher was on a trip to the Czech Republic recently. He found and took a snapshot of this gate from the middle ages.

Back home, he fashioned a one-of-a-kind fireplace grate for a client that was directly inspired by the unique design of the gate.

What do you use as your design inspiration?

Mr. Custom Steel

Last week, I was visiting my friends at Motley Home. While there, I met D. Tillery. He's from Providence, but was spending the day in Boston searching for custom contemporary furniture. He let me know that he is part of the Steel Yard, a collaborative of metalworking sculptors.

As Mr. Custom Steel, he makes custom steel, well, anything. From his website: "Anything is possible. Any metal, mixed media, architectural installations, custom furniture, sculpture, prototypes, your designs or mine." The work that he shows on his website is as varied as that description. His work has been shown in various cities around the country. It's quite creative, with each piece showcasing his unique ability with some metal and a blowtorch.

Marie-Josée Roy: Enfin / At Last

Gallery Anthony Curtis is going to be hosting the first US showing of Montreal artist Marie-Josée Roy's work.

"Marie-Josée Roy is an exceptional figure in the vibrant Montreal art scene and a strong force in the attention-grabbing art movement that was first underground and is now steering mainstream. This art movement has been pushed forward by a new generation of emerging young artists exemplified by Marie-Josée Roy, who expands on her European heritage and breaks both new ideological and technological grounds to establish a new Quebecois identity."

Moda Cucina

After eight years importing some of the best and most luxurious kitchens from Europe, Paul Hatziiliades decided he could do it on his own, locally. He started Moda Cucina, a new, high end kitchen design studio in the Boston Design Center.

Dana Zemack of Zemack PR told me, "Moda Cucina is not an importer – they custom design and build their cutting edge kitchens from start to finish in Boston using Boston design talent as well as a Boston-based green fabrication facility." Each kitchen is built with a superior level of workmanship, and every last detail can be customized.

Modern, green and local. Can it get any better?

Reside

Earlier today I was walking down Concord Ave in Cambridge. I was happy to find Reside, a store in who's windows I have drooled many times (because it's always been at night), was open.

Reside sells "original works of great design as well as rare and hard to find pieces by some of the era's greatest designers and manufacturers." What does that mean? Wall to wall modern furniture.

Right as I walked in, the mid-century modernist in me bugged out. Right in front of me as I walked in was a Wassily Chair in brown leather, and behind that was an Eames lounge chair - my favorite. I didn't have much time, so I only gave the store a quick walk through. All I can say is, I will SO be back.

Architectural Digest's call for content

Is your home worthy of some attention from Architectural Digest? If so, you're in luck. Amy Morris from Architectural Digest emailed me today, letting me know they are reaching out for contributions for their editorial content.

"Paige Rense, Editor-In-Chief of Architectural Digest, has always found creative inspiration from the books she reads and the places they've taken her. So when Paige was shaping the editorial direction of Architectural Digest she invited distinguished authors and playwrights to write features that would inspire others. Authors such as Kurt Vonnegut, John Irving, Aurthur Miller, Gore Vidal and more have contributed to Architectural Digest since the 80's."

Architectural Digest, in association with The Design Centers, will be hosting open auditions for content in various cities over the next several months. The first event, best for us Bostonians, will be in New York on October 10 and 11. The official announcement is in the Letter from the Editor in the September issue of AD, out today.

Karen Sugarman Designs

Former Boston interior designer Karen Sugarman has, upon moving to Arizona, reinvented herself as a custom jewelry maker, and has started Karen Sugarman Designs as a result.

"What began as a fun little design idea for my own benefit has become a full blown obsession. I hand make each piece of jewelry with the creative knowledge of color, proportion and scale that my interior design background has provided. All of my designs are infused with unique gemstones, pearls, vintage and Czech beads and are structured on either sterling silver or gold vermeil thus eliminating most jewelry allergies."

Karen is currently having a 20% off "Grand Opening" sale. Also, be sure to sign her guestbook and let her know what you think about her new venture.

Karen, congratulations and best of luck!

Uniform Sale - and Best of Boston!

You've gotta love Gary from Uniform. Just in time for this bout of HOT weather, he sends out news that his spring and summer merchandise is now 30% off!

And if my consistent raving about the place wasn't enough, how's this? Uniform was also chosen for the Best of Boston for Men's Casual Clothing - for the third year in a row!

Congratulation Gary! Sounds like a great reason to be at the Best of Boston - Shopping party in November...

Gunta Stölzl's rugs at DWR

Gunta Stolzl with other Bauhaus mastersGunta Stölzl, the only female master of the Bauhaus school in pre-WWII Germany, was one of the preeminent modern textile designers. She helped weaving go from a craft occupation to industrial design.

Gunta Stolzl Plate 106 Rug DWR has released a series of Stölzl's rugs that never got beyond the design-on-paper stage. I particularly like the Plate 106 rug, with its abstract array of colors, lines and geometry.
